After the frantic pace and stress that comes with being surrounded by close to two million people in Philippines capital Manila, a move to the tiny, relaxed tourist north Queensland community of Airlie Beach would be culture shock for many. But for Vision Surveys’ award winning Graduate Town Planner Justin Arile, it feels like he’s found home.

On completing a Bachelor of Architecture in 2010, Justin worked as a licensed architect in his homeland for nine years before to moving Australia. In 2020 he enrolled in the Master of Planning and Urban Design at James Cook University. Last month that proved a great decision when his hard work and talent was recognised by the Planning Institute of Australia who presented him with the student award for Best Overall Performance in Master Planning and Urban Design.

Justin said the move to Australia was prompted by a desire to grow his skills and knowledge and he has found willing mentors at both university and the leadership at Vision Surveys.

“While building my career as an architect in the Philippines I decided I wanted to complete a Masters in Planning and Urban Design and the chance to do that in Australia was very appealing,” Justin said.

“I studied and had a lot of jobs including working in a hotel, as an online shopper at Coles – I even drove a tuk tuk as part of the tourist industry here in Airlie Beach! My lecturer knew I was working three jobs and still getting good grades and told me she was proud to nominate me for the award. I still didn’t think I’d have a chance of winning and was a little stunned when I did.

“Since joining Vision Surveys as a Graduate Town Planner in April I’ve also had wonderful support from my managers, Lee and Andrea.

It's a busy office but they're great at keeping the environment relaxed and it's the perfect atmosphere in which to learn.

Justin said he's enjoying combining his skills in architecture and planning and has fallen in love with the lifestyle he has found in his new home.

“My background in architecture have helped me a lot and it’s already allowed me to take on some larger projects,” he said.

“Unfortunately my architecture degree isn’t recognised in Australia so I’d like to study further.

I see my future with Vision Surveys as I enjoy working with a great team and I love the Airlie Beach lifestyle and community.

“Of course I miss my family but I definitely don’t miss Manila! But technology today is so good that I can phone my Mum every day and video chat with her several times a week.”

Vision Surveys and everyone at PeopleIN is incredibly proud of all Justin has achieved in his short career with us and we look forward to supporting him to achieve even bigger things in the future!

“It was just going to be a little job for a couple of months, when I first came back from overseas”. 14 years ago Karlee Berg began her career with Tribe Workforce Solutions as an Administration Assistant. Today, after performing every role in between (and often more than one at once!), she’s now the General Manager. “I trained as a beauty therapist and I'd been working overseas, as the day spa manager on cruise ships. It’s a hectic lifestyle and I was pretty burnt out when I got home and needed a break,” Karlee said. “I think I'd only been back in the country for a month and a friend, who was working with AWX (another of PeopleIN’s brands), said the directors had started this new business, focused on the hospitality sector. They didn’t have admin or account staff, just a general manager, and people from AWX were just jumping in to help where they could.
