Recovering with Care: Marc’s Journey Through the Recover At Work Program

GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND - JOEL KASS

Marc Sanchez was working on a remote energy site in the Snowy Mountains when a metal splinter in his finger escalated from a small injury into a severe infection, complicated by the site’s remoteness and a strict no-driving-after-dark policy. PeopleIN’s Recover At Work program, led by Techforce representative Joel Kass, played a crucial role in preventing a potentially dangerous outcome.

Joel’s involvement began immediately, arranging a Telehealth consultation and medication on-site while keeping in regular contact to monitor Marc’s condition.

“Given the risks, we knew every decision had to be swift and well-planned,” Joel explains.

Despite early intervention, Marc’s symptoms rapidly worsened, prompting Joel to coordinate a critical transport to Canberra, arranging overnight hospital accommodation and ensuring Marc wasn’t burdened with expenses.

Even after Marc was cleared for travel back to Brisbane, Joel’s vigilance remained steady. “Watching the infection progress was concerning, and I knew immediate action was necessary,” Joel recalls. He quickly arranged another urgent Telehealth consultation through our trusted provider network.

During the consultation, the doctor recommended emergency care upon Marc’s arrival in Brisbane, noting the risk of sepsis. Joel then organised immediate transport to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, where Marc received IV antibiotics and intensive observation.

Throughout the ordeal, Joel maintained constant communication, checking in at all hours to ensure Marc was supported, even between 1 am and 3 am on a Saturday. He also managed the administrative side, liaising with site managers, arranging transportation, and ensuring Marc’s fitness for work was documented and prioritised for future opportunities.

Reflecting on the experience, Joel shares: “The most important thing for me is making sure our people feel supported and know they’re not alone. If I can help take away some of that stress, then I know I’ve done my job.”

For Marc, this comprehensive care made all the difference. “Joel’s support went beyond the basics,” Marc says. “Knowing someone had my back meant I could focus on getting better - and that’s not something I take for granted.” His journey is a testament to the Recover At Work program’s impact, illustrating that timely, compassionate intervention can turn a dire situation into a story of resilience and recovery.

Kerryn Stewartson, Head of Recover At Work, reflects on the program’s holistic approach: “It’s a huge win for the employee too, as we know it’s important for mental health and well-being that they’re able to feel valued by returning to their normal working environment.”

Marc’s story underscores the importance of addressing both the physical and emotional needs of employees, showcasing how genuine care and timely action can make all the difference in a person’s recovery and reintegration into the workplace.

“It was just going to be a little job for a couple of months, when I first came back from overseas”. 14 years ago Karlee Berg began her career with Tribe Workforce Solutions as an Administration Assistant. Today, after performing every role in between (and often more than one at once!), she’s now the General Manager. “I trained as a beauty therapist and I'd been working overseas, as the day spa manager on cruise ships. It’s a hectic lifestyle and I was pretty burnt out when I got home and needed a break,” Karlee said. “I think I'd only been back in the country for a month and a friend, who was working with AWX (another of PeopleIN’s brands), said the directors had started this new business, focused on the hospitality sector. They didn’t have admin or account staff, just a general manager, and people from AWX were just jumping in to help where they could.
